The Tokyo subway is almost ominously quiet. Eye contact is avoided and most riders are glued to social media on their mobiles. A helpful reminder intersperses the silence telling us all not to make calls on our mobile phones on the train as it will ‘annoy the person next to you’. I never saw anyone talking on their phone on a train in Tokyo, although I barely saw anybody not staring at their mobile screen.
